I’m a multi-passionate creative mompreneur. What a mouthful, right? Basically I not only run multiple business in different industries, but I’m doing it while managing the insanity that can sometimes come with being a mom. I’m proof that you can pursue your dreams of working from home and enjoy every moment of your little monsters growing up without having to feel guilty or go without. I’m here to assure you that you’re not crazy for believing that your skills, talents and passions can provide for you and your family without a traditional out of the house job no matter what those quiet voices may be making you think. You are magical and the world needs your unique combination of skills and talents to spill forth and create amazingness. There is abundance out there just waiting to be tapped into, all it takes is the confidence to know that you can do it, and you can rock the hell out it.
My husband Jake and I were married when we were 18 and even at that young age we knew two things: we wanted to start a family and we wanted to be our own bosses.
Though I spent a few years doing freelance photography and blogging, our first real toe dip into the world of entrepreneurship came at the age of 19 when we packed up our stuff and moved halfway across the country to work on a vermiculture business with my husband’s brother in law. (What’s vermiculture, you say? Oh, it’s basically worm poop. Super nutrient packed, uber organic, best thing you can do for your garden, natural fertilizer. But yeah, worm poo.) It was totally out of my realm but my husband had sprouted a love for horticulture during one semester of college and was really intrigued by the science behind the business.
After a year or two my husband went on to meet and work with a small company with an eBay store selling a variety of bulk fertilizers. In the few years my hubby worked with them I was keeping an active green living lifestyle/mommy blog and learning a lot about coding and design as well as social media and marketing yourself and the importance behind it. In 2013 while pregnant with our second little girl we launched The Seed Supply, an online source for non GMO garden seeds and organic certified soil nutrients. In the 4 years my husband had been immersed in the garden industry we found ourselves interested and obsessed with trying to grow our own food and plants and only using natural, organic methods and amendments to get the results we wanted. His knowledge and interest about the products and industry paired with my photography, coding and social media created a business that not only provided for our growing family, but allowed our business to grow as well.
On a bootstrap budget we built our business 100% ourselves without having to outsource or pay extra for any of it. Bit by bit I created and designed our product labels, took all the product photography, set up marketplaces and a website and started getting our name out there. Could we have paid someone else to take care of a lot of it for us? Sure. But there’s a real sense of pride in being able to say you’ve built it from scratch while being self taught. Besides, when we first started this business we were truly on a shoestring budget and it was a necessity to save money where we could and by the time we were making the money to outsource, I’d already taught myself skills beyond what was needed to run the business.
In Spring 2015 I decided that apparently my plate wasn’t already full enough with what had become a supercharged growing online business and two rambunctious now toddlers/young kids so I officially opened a little Etsy shop to sell my business logos, fun and motivational digital prints and cards. After all, I’d had people coming to me for small graphics projects for years, it only seemed natural to put some organized effort into channeling it into a shop and open up my services to people all over the world. It’s gotten nothing but great feedback and one of my designs was even picked up by the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign in Feb 2016 for use and distribution at a rally.
LET ME REITERATE TO YOU:
